A good weekend
By PO via Satellite and Danni Griggos.

A joint effort this week with the factual elements being provided via the hazy (after the Help for Hereos gig in the Club) memories of Danni and the more tongue in cheek bits from the PO.

The Reserves returned to action following last week’s inactivity in a promotion six pointer against Wilbraham, who had been creeping up on the rails in recent week. The Chavs had returned following their ‘Gavin and Stacey’ weekend in Swansea. The cast being made up Gavin (Si), Stacey (Davina), Gav’s Dad (Arge), Uncle Bryn (Ed) and Smithy (Swanny). The latter easiest to cast given that both characters love pies! The boys curiously choosing an area with an unusually high suicide rate amongst young adults for their jolly. Where next Beachy Head? PJ also looking to have benefited from his intensive fitness weekend at Center Parks with his best mate Jamie and a couple of female fitness coaches!

On the pitch, Manager Van Ancarrepairs followed the Premiership trend of playing foreign keepers when Spanish international Danni Griggos was preferred to the home grown Big Ant. However, he was less swayed by sentiment as the other Club legend Michel Planktini could only secure a place on the bench. Michel is currently in contractual dispute with the Club as he seeks a new two year deal, the Club, in line with its policy, only offering one year deals to the over forties! Elsewhere the Chavs, all except Eddie, returned but with Si joining Planktini, Tubes and Golder on a super strength bench. AJ was also absent enjoying a two match Cambs FA sponsored mini-break, he was joined by his Mum in the main stand as she served her one match touchline ban. Henri (Preston) joined new signing Steve Mallyon in the starting line up. The latter signed with special EUFA dispensation outside of the transfer window.

The Reserves got their promotion push back on track with a superb 5-0 result over Wilbraham. The home side made a good start, although the early exchanges were  fairly even. Whittlesford took lead with trademark header from Henri, following a  perfect corner form Arge midway through the first half.

Wilbraham had a couple of chances, and one from close range clipped the post and went wide. A close thing but Griggos reckoned that he had it covered! The home side increased  their lead when PJ reacted first to a loose ball to score from close in, following some good work from Davina. Wilbraham finished half well and hit the post again with a sweet left foot shot from twenty yards, once again the keeper had things under control. 'There's no point saving them unless they're going in' said Griggos.

Half time 2 v 0 - Peter May was resplendent displaying a retro Fulham shirt in preparation for the FA cup game. Did he resemble an older Johnny Haynes, Griggos thought cruely more perhaps Jimmy Hill! (I presume not the one of Cambs FA fame!).

The home side started a bit slowly in 2nd half but were able to absorb a brief spell of pressure. The third goal came from a Pete Appleyard header from a Gareth free kick (No doubt a mis-placed shot!). Dan Golder came on and instantly scored after seeing off a couple of defenders with ease, after he latched onto an 'awesome' cross from fellow sub Si. He added the fifth again after holding off a defender with good strength. Wilbraham fought hard and should have gained a consolation after Gareth went off with injury. A much improved and needed performance overall.

Paddy gave Gareth man of the match after solid display at centre half. The spectators can post their votes on the website. Did you agree with Van Ancarrepairs?

Elsewhere results were largely favourable to the cause with another defeat for the Villa (2-4 against Bassingbourn), but a Fulbourn win kept them in contention. This all means that Whittlesford are third in the table (with an 8-6-1 record), just 3 points behind Newmarket A but with 7 games in hand. However, both Wilbraham and Fulbourn are capable of beating us to the second promotion place.

After the game there was much confusion in the Supporter’s Club when Kuwaiti born property developer / renovator Ali Ive-Bin-Bowled (the literal translation of the Arabic is ‘The Claw’) overheard a conversation about taking a stake in the Club, with Al Fahtie looking to refinance. When asked whether he was interested in making an investment he replied with a laugh, sounding similar to Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the Joker, and said ‘No, I thought someone said are you interested in taking a steak. I’d love a fillet, with chips and mushrooms. Investing in football, no way! Cricket’s my bloody game. I’m the best opener in division 55 South. Tell him Pagey!’ Al Fahtie was overheard muttering that he may have to cancel his skiing trip if the HMRC don’t drop their High Court action in relation to the VAT debt.

The highlights of the Karaoke in the evening – were Weeman 'the future X Factor' star (or should that be 'ex-Spicers factory star') performed the Elton John classic ‘Your Song’, while the Chairman 'serenaded' his good lady with ‘Born to be Wild’.
